How can BIM data be efficiently shared with all the professionals involved in the project? With DWG — and ARES Commander builds better bridges between BIM creators and DWG consumers.
Berlin-based CAD software developer Gräbert has been developing DWG CAD tools since 1994, now spanning Windows, Mac, Linux and cloud. Martyn Day talked with company CTO Robert Gräbert and business development & marketing director Cédric Desbordes on the company’s efforts to better link 2D to BIM. Building Information Modelling (BIM) was sold as a way of getting automated drawings by modelling a building in 3D. – What we actually got is more drawings. We now model a building to get drawings that need 2D editing, and if the model changes, we need to do the edits again. In our conversations with AEC firms, there are growing calls to get rid of drawings completely and work only from 3D models. The bad news is that in manufacturing, which is a decade further ahead in the adoption of modelling virtual prototypes, they still produce and rely on 2D drawings. There is also
ARES Trinity of CAD platform provides intelligent and automated DWG CAD solutions to multiple industries, including AEC and manufacturing. And it does so by providing favorable economics over rivals so companies can redeploy capital towards remote work and emerging technologies
Anthony Frausto-Robledo talks about ARES CAD Technology Reseller Aertworks in the US ‘ARES CAD technology to be further accelerated in United States market due to new reseller partnership between Graebert and AERTWORKS. Germany’s software firm Graebert has formed an agreement with US-based AERTWORKS, a provider of design and innovation management solutions, to resell Graebert’s ARES Trinity of 2D/3D CAD software for desktop, mobile, and cloud in the United States of America. ARES CAD TechnologyGraebert’s ARES CAD technology is based on the (.dwg) file format in native form, meaning the software is essentially fully native compatible with Autodesk’s AutoCAD; it can read, create, and modify files directly in the same format as AutoCAD, but for a fraction of the cost. ARES CAD technology at the desktop level feels largely familiar to its US rival’s software, from dialogs to keyboard commands, facilitating the ability for companies, teams, and individuals to transition from
‘More than any other DWG vendor, Graebert of Germany has done more to connect the primary design platforms with one another — desktop/laptop on Linux/Mac/Windows; tablet/phone on Android/iOS; and Web browsers. The name of the company may not be familiar to you, as they tend to sell white label CAD. Companies like Corel, Dassault Systems, and Onshape use Graebert’s “ARES” code for their DWG editors.’
Graebert sees that much BIM work is also done in DWG — 3D modeling in BIM, 2D drawings in DWG. Drawings are useful in organizing the complexity of BIM models, and for focusing on the details that are needed to carry out building projects — never mind the legal weight that signed drawings carry.
”ARES Commander began as a replacement to AutoCAD, and then found its greatest impact as OEM software (licensed and branded by other firms) by firms such as Dassault Systemes (“DraftSight”) and Corel Software (“CorelCAD”). Graebert GmbH found further success in selling into verticals, such as facilities mapping and kitchen design.

At one time, it may have been possible to consider Graebert as the maker of products to compete with AutoCAD but that was a long time ago.
Graebert’s CAD tools—from DraftSight for Dassault’s customers, to the Ares products, and CAD products such as CorelCAD licensed to other companies—have found their own places in the world. Ares technology represents the second largest base of CAD DWG users in the world behind Autodesk. Just as important, however, is Graebert’s continuing work within the ODA to improve workflows from drafting to BIM, which was a major focus for the company when it presented its annual update for press and analysts as a virtual conference.
Graebert made the decision to extend the free access to ARES Kudo until the end of June 2020 for all users. Additionally, any user that will have tried ARES Kudo in the first-half of 2020 will be offered a free license valid until the end of December 2020 only on the condition to join Graebert’s focus group.
