Kajima Corporation, Japan
Inspection of 742 bridges with PowerCAD

The Kajima Corporation, one of the famous civil engineering offices in Tokyo has developed a PowerCAD-Solution for the professional inspection of bridges. The challenge of this project was to design a unique method to document the state of deterioration and damage for many years. In the early phase of deterioration and damage there are only less reported information sometimes only observations of the progress.

The PowerCAD-solution was designed to collect structured information about the bridges from the very beginning. The deterioration and damage were located by a fragmentation of the bridge into a numbered matrix. The damage can now be recorded in many ways. PowerCAD works with the original engineer drawings and deals with tools to add information like pictures, voice-notes, sketches or text-blocks into the drawing.

The inspectors work on-site with mobile devices like tablet PC or PDA and a digital camera to collect the data. Back into the office the reports were replicated to a server, and the operator can print out the reports from the inspection. However, the previous inspections were based on the necessity of measures in the early state of deterioration or damage, but now the idea of asset management is adopted to appraise the cost of bridges over the whole life circle.

The Kajima engineering corporation applies 10 PowerCAD XP and 6 CE versions, the Aomori Prefecture 20 x PowerCAD CE as governmental project. In 2007 20 more licenses will be installed in Osaka supported by Kajima.

What is the OpenDWG File Format?

The OpenDWG file format is a commercial project of the Open Design Alliance to make a fully interchangeable version of the popular DWG Computer Aided Design (CAD) file format to make CAD drawings more accessible. You can change your drawings back and forth with other software applications that alos use the successful .DWG format. A number of leading commercial CAD products now make use of the OpenDWG libraries to open and save files in DWG.
